Darrell Underschultz was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1965. After receiving a diploma in Fine Art from Grant McEwan College in 1986, he moved to Vancouver to continue his education at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. After graduating from the ECCAD Graphics Design department in 1992, Darrell worked as an illustrator for several years before deciding to shift his focus to his fine art practice. He currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

‘LANDMARKS’ explores the tension between chaos and control, the natural and the manufactured. Painted black textures are redacted into sculptural forms that contain a sense of movement and tonal depth.

The swirling painted textures echo familiar natural elements such as woodgrain, stone and flowing water. Using a light neutral tone, sections of canvas are painted out to reveal forms that are both organic and angular, resembling silhouettes or cut outs that have been pieced together. The quality of these textures and shapes evoke themes of nature, growth and interconnectedness.

About Darrell and his work

Darrell Underschultz was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1965. After showing an interest in drawing and painting at an early age, Darrell's parents enrolled him in art lessons at the Edmonton Art Gallery. As a child, much of his spare time was spent painting watercolor landscapes or drawing portraits of family and friends. Growing up on the vast Prairies was an early influence on Darrell and his art, sparking the genesis of the theme of isolation, which recurs in his work to this day.

Darrell received a diploma in Fine Arts from Grant MacEwan Community College in 1986 and then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to continue his education at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. After graduating from Emily Carr with a diploma in Graphic Design in 1992, Darrell worked as an illustrator for several years before deciding to focus on a career as a full-time painter. He continues to live and paint in Vancouver.
