Dubai Lululemon Desert Rose Sculpture

We have been working with Lululemon since 2007, designing and building custom feature lighting, sculpture and store fronts for more than 50 of their stores across North America. In 2016 Lululemon approached us with a very open and interesting design brief. They were looking for a 40 foot long suspended sculpture to be the central feature in their new flagship store in Dubai. Lulu’s design brief called for the inspiration for the piece to be a geological phenomenon called the 'desert rose' that is native to the desert of the UAE. The 'desert rose' is a flower-like formation of crystal clusters composed of gypsum combined with grains of sand. This beautiful natural phenomenon was a perfect starting point from which to abstract the form of the sculpture. 

Through many iterations, we worked to distill the geometry of the desert rose down to it’s essence, eventually developing a faceted spherical form that we repeated in three different diameters. We then composed the entire installation in a manner that would lend a soft, organic feeling to the overall form. Interspersed with the translucent sculptural elements are three dozen hanging globe lights that illuminate the sculpture. These lighting elements were designed assist in the ambient lighting of the store while adding depth to the sculpture.
