Michael Morris, 1942 - 2022

Michael Morris is a Canadian artist known for his significant contributions
to the world of contemporary art. Working in Vancouver, he initially gained recognition as a painter and printmaker, exploring various abstract and conceptual art forms. His early works often combined elements of geometric abstraction with an emphasis on color, space, and form.

In addition to his artistic practice, Morris played a crucial role in establishing artist-run spaces and collectives, including Western Front Society in 1973, and Image Bank (1969) which embraced the concept of art as a social exchange and challenged traditional notions of authorship.

As his career progressed, Morris expanded his artistic repertoire, delving into multimedia installations, photography, and video art. He embraced new technologies and techniques, continuously exploring innovative ways to express his ideas.

Over the years, Michael Morris’s artwork has been exhibited extensively in prestigious institutions such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
